Apple OS X 10.8.3 and issues with CUDA and OpenCL

Apple OS X 10.8.3 Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Assimilate Scratch

Thanks to the forums over at LiftGammaGain it appears that there are reports rolling in of issues with CUDA and OpenCL performance with the newest Apple OS X update 10.8.3.

The recent update causes applications like Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve when using Nvidia GPUs. An updated Nvidia driver for OS X 10.8.3 seems to clear up this issue.

The Assimilate Scratch team seemed to offer up this e-mail, cautioning Mac users to hold off on the OS X update this time around.

Apple just released OS X version 10.8.3. We found that there are several issues with the OpenCL implementation of that build – giving poor performance on the NVidia graphics cards. Until further notice we do not recommend upgrading.

thanks,
The Assimilate Team

There has been no reports on the effects of OS X 10.8.3 on graphics reliant Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Speedgrade but if you’ve experienced problems then I encourage you to post a comment.

The CUDA features in After Effects CS6 no longer work – although 10.8.3 has fixed the OpenGL issue with Speed Tree [Angelo’s note: typo for Speedgrade?] which didn’t work with my GTX 570. So I hope After Effects gets fixed or I’ll have to downgrade.

No: Speed Tree, the vegetation building app. So now I have two options: render 3D in After Effects using the slow CPU option, and keep Speed Tree working, or downgrade to 10.8.2 and get my CUDA back but lose Speed Tree.

      Great.

Does AE stop working even after updating your CUDA driver to 5.0.45? Which card are you using?

I have a GTX 570 that worked great in OS X 10.8.2, and yes I have the very latest CUDA driver. I might try downgrading, but I bet it won’t work… I don’t know if it’s an OpenCL issue, but the trick to make it work in OS X with my card no longer seems to be relevant. Ho hum. Adobe were less than helpful.

photoshop cs6 opencl option on the integrated hd 4000 gpu on the retina macbook pro is completely disabled after upgrading to 10.8.3 when it worked on 10.8.2 + seemingly pooper graphics performance in the app
